What The Dark Matter of Love Is About
Sarah McCarthy’s documentary follows the Diaz family in Wisconsin adopting three Russian children at once: eleven-year-old Masha and five-year-old twins Marcel and Vadim. Cami, the couple’s own daughter, is fourteen and has had all of her parents’ attention until now. Bonding with children raised in institutions turns out to be far harder than anyone expected, so the family brings in developmental psychologists, and the film records month by month how the work of attachment is actually taught. Cut into it is archive footage of older experiments on love and attachment, including Harry Harlow’s work with monkeys, which is now widely regarded as ethically indefensible and which the film does not soften.
