What The Death of Louis XIV Is About
August 1715. The king comes back from a walk with a pain in his leg and never gets up again. The film watches the two weeks that follow, almost entirely in one room by candlelight: the doctors and their useless remedies, the court waiting, the king's voice getting smaller. Albert Serra is not recounting a historical event but recording a body going out. The whole idea is that a man who ruled for seventy-two years ends up unable to ask for a glass of water. The king is played by Jean-Pierre Leaud, the face of the French New Wave.
