What The Deceased Is About
Leon Hirszman's 1965 Brazilian film adapts a play by Nelson Rodrigues. Zulmira lives in a poor neighbourhood of Rio, is unwell and dissatisfied with her life. After visiting a fortune teller she learns that a blonde woman will threaten her peace, and begins suspecting her husband's cousin Glorinha. Her real fixation, though, is her own funeral: she wants a magnificent one and is saving for it. The film tells that relationship with death from inside Brazilian popular culture and shows how display becomes entangled with poverty. Fernanda Montenegro appears in a role of this size on screen for the first time and keeps the character from being either ridiculous or pitiful. It is one of the less known but solid works of the Cinema Novo period. Who it's for: viewers curious about Brazilian cinema in the sixties and adaptations of Nelson Rodrigues. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a sympathetic protagonist; Zulmira is a difficult character.
