What The Deer King Is About
Van, a former soldier of a defeated people, works like a slave in an imperial mine. One night wild dogs break in and leave a deadly disease behind them; the only survivors are Van and a small girl named Yuna. They try to build a quiet life in the countryside and are hunted for it. What makes the film interesting is who the disease kills and who it spares, because that difference turns into a political question. Adapted from Nahoko Uehashi's novel.
