Fusé: Memoirs of a Huntress

Hamaji is a young hunter raised in the mountains. She follows her older brother down to Edo. In the city, creatures called Fusé are being hunted on the shogun's orders; a bounty has been placed on these beings, said to stand somewhere between human and dog. Hamaji joins the hunt too. But she becomes the friend of one of them without knowing what it is. Masayuki Miyaji's anime is adapted from a novel by Kazuki Sakuraba, which itself rewrites the classic Japanese epic Nansō Satomi Hakkenden. The telling blurs the line between hunter and hunted: it is not clear who the monster is. Edo is drawn as crowded and loud. Hamaji's growing up is the real subject; the hunt is the pretext.
