What The Devil's Bath Is About
Austria, 1750. Agnes is newly married and devout, and in her new house at the edge of the forest her days turn into a list of chores and expectations while something closes over her. The period had a name for it: the devil's bath, a melancholy with no remedy. What the film rests on is real court records. People who believed suicide meant damnation would kill someone else, confess, receive absolution and be executed. Franz and Fiala tell this as history rather than horror, and it is heavy going.
