The documentary is about an ageing model, Benedetta Barzini. She wants to leave the world of images and disappear altogether; her son, for his part, is determined to make one last film about her. The tension between the two turns into an unexpected collaboration and into a direct reckoning with the gaze of the camera. While building a portrait the film also argues about portraiture itself: who is filming, who is giving permission and who is able to say no. The account leaves the mother’s objections uncut, which puts the film at odds with its own subject. That contradiction is kept on purpose. Beniamino Barrese’s ninety four minute Italian documentary was completed in 2019.
