The Disciple

The summer of 1939. Karl, thirteen years old, arrives in the Åland Islands. The islands are in the Baltic Sea. He wants to work there as assistant to Hasselbond, the lighthouse master. Hasselbond turns him down because he is too young. Karl struggles hard to be allowed to stay. In the meantime he becomes friends with Gustaf, Hasselbond’s son. Gustaf lives under his father’s thumb. Then Hasselbond starts favouring Karl over his own son. At that point the friendship turns into rivalry and hate. The account runs drama and thriller together. Erik Enge and Patrik Kumpulainen take the leads, with Amanda Ooms also in the cast, in Ulrika Bengts’s Finnish film of 2013.
