Hatice Cengiz What The Dissident Is About
The documentary tells the killing of Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018 along two lines: the audio recordings held by Turkish prosecutors, and the spyware placed on the phone of Omar Abdulaziz, a dissident living in Canada. The second line is the film's real finding, since Abdulaziz's correspondence with Khashoggi was being read and the surveillance network preceding the murder is documented on screen. Bryan Fogel premiered it at Sundance, but none of the large streaming platforms took it and distribution went through independent routes, a silence widely read as an extension of the pressure the film describes. The telling is fast, supported by graphics, and rests its case on documents. Who it is for: viewers who follow political documentary and the argument over surveillance technology. Who it is not for: anyone who wants to avoid the recorded details of the murder.
