What The Divine Comedy Is About
In a psychiatric hospital the patients take themselves for other people: Jesus, Lazarus, Martha, Mary, Adam, Eve, Sonia, Raskolnikov, Alyosha and Ivan Karamazov, a philosopher, a prophet, Teresa of Ávila. Written and directed by Manoel de Oliveira, the film puts quotations from Dostoevsky, from Nietzsche, from the Bible and from the Portuguese writer José Régio into their mouths. There is neither a plot nor a treatment; what emerges is a philosophical and religious argument conducted along a hospital corridor. It competed at the 48th Venice Film Festival and took the Special Jury Prize. Maria de Medeiros, Luís Miguel Cintra and Leonor Silveira are in the cast.
