What The Earthling Is About
A man given a terminal diagnosis goes back to the country he came from, into the Australian bush, to die there. On the way he comes across a boy whose parents have been killed in an accident, a city child with no chance of lasting a week alone out there. He does not take him back. He decides to teach him how to survive. Peter Collinson's 1980 film is a hard-edged story about teaching: the man has very little time left and no intention of being gentle about it. William Holden plays him late in his career, with Rick Schroder as the boy. The landscape is not scenery here, it is the thing they are both up against.
