What The Escape Is About
In the summer of 1928, seven inmates get out of the National Penitentiary in Buenos Aires through a tunnel they have been digging for months, and a miscalculation brings them up inside a coal shop run by an elderly Spanish couple. Among them are an anarchist, a confidence man, several murderers, a card cheat and an innocent man put away on a corrupt commissioner’s word. Eduardo Mignogna adapted it from his own novel, working from a real escape. The Palermo prison had been demolished, so the old jail at Ushuaia stood in for it. Each of the runaways gets a separate ending, and the film lays them over one another instead of lining them up.
