Ricardo Darín plays the law clerk Benjamín Espósito in Juan José Campanella's The Secret in Their Eyes. Writing in the BFI archive, Maria Delgado calls him the director's unvarying actor and takes his performance at the centre as a faultless lesson in minimal acting: it writes that he gets past the moulds of both the cliché romantic lead and the plaintive good man with skill. Delgado also relays that the director likened him to Tom Hanks and to Henry Fonda both. It also takes the honest juror Fonda played in a courtroom film of 1957 as a reference point for his reading of Benjamín as a working-class outsider. For Delgado, even when the melodrama comes close to taking over the plot his own playing stays in balance. The records of the Spanish film academy hold four nominations and one award for him: in 2010 for The Secret in Their Eyes and El baile de la Victoria, in 2015 for Wild Tales, and in 2016 for Truman, where he won the leading category.
