The Fall of Fujimori

The documentary covers Alberto Fujimori’s decade in power in Peru. His rise from the son of poor Japanese immigrants to the presidency is in it. So is his relationship with his intelligence chief, Vladimiro Montesinos. So is the self coup that dissolved Congress and the judiciary overnight. The hostage crisis at the Japanese embassy comes into the story too. What sets the film apart is that Fujimori himself speaks. The director met him in Tokyo. He had fled Peru by then. The film gives him a great deal of room. It was criticised for not pushing back on what he said. That is worth knowing before watching. Fujimori was tried in Peru in 2009. He was sentenced to twenty five years for crimes against humanity. Alberto Fujimori speaks in the eighty three minute documentary, an American and Peruvian co-production Ellen Perry finished in 2006.
