Kasym Zhakibayev What The Fall of Otrar Is About
The film tells the last days of the city of Otrar in Central Asia. While intrigue, betrayal and a struggle for power go on around it, the armies of Genghis Khan draw near, and in the end the city is destroyed methodically. The account does not gather its events around a single hero; it gives a wide picture of how a whole region came apart. Over its long length the film builds war not as something splendid but as a process of annihilation. It came to be counted among the most ambitious works made in Kazakh cinema before independence. The account does not build its events on the rightness of one side; who sold whom out stays unclear to the end. Ardak Amirkulov’s hundred and fifty six minute Kazakh film was completed in 1991.
