What The Fantastic Adventures of Unico Is About
This 1981 anime, adapted from a character created by Osamu Tezuka, follows Unico, a young unicorn taken from his family by the gods. Unico has the power to make those around him happy and the gods count that as a threat; each time he is banished somewhere else and begins again. Despite the look of children's animation the tone is dark. Unico attaches himself to someone in each section and loses his memory at the end of it; the cycle of the narrative is built on loss. Tezuka's familiar line is preserved; the palette is soft and the character design round. Against that, the villain's sections are quite harsh for small viewers. The narrative is episodic and the link between the parts is weak. Who it's for: those who like classic Japanese animation and the Tezuka world. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a cheerful children's film throughout; the film tells a repeating separation.
