What The Fifth Horseman Is Fear Is About
In occupied Prague, Dr Braun, forbidden to practise medicine because he is Jewish, has been set to work cataloguing the confiscated homes and possessions of other Jews. When he is asked to treat a badly wounded resistance fighter in secret, the decision puts not only himself but everyone in his building at risk. His search for morphine stops being a practical errand and turns into an expressionist nightmare about what it does to a person to live inside fear. Zbynek Brynych adapted Hana Belohradska’s novel Bez krasy, bez limce and shot the film at the Barrandov studios. The years it describes are the Nazi occupation, but its account of how a totalitarian system works looks comfortably at its own decade too.
