Andrei Konchalovsky's 1965 first feature is adapted from a book by Chingiz Aitmatov. In 1923, with the civil war just over, Dyuishen is discharged from the Red Army and sent as a teacher to a mountain village in Kyrgyzstan. There is no school, the elders will not let the children attend, and the young man stands alone with his faith in the doctrine he has brought. He falls in love with Altynai, one of his pupils, but her father sells her to a wealthy chieftain. Konchalovsky neither draws the villagers as backward nor makes the teacher a flawless hero; each side has a violence of its own. Bolot Beyshenaliev and Natalya Arinbasarova star.
