The film does not tell the life of Saint Francis from beginning to end; it is made of small, plain scenes. The brothers walk in the rain, look for food, stand in front of a tyrant, learn to be patient with each other. Rossellini cast real Franciscan monks, and the only professional actor is Aldo Fabrizi as the tyrant. Federico Fellini worked on the script. It draws on the fourteenth-century Fioretti, and the Italian title comes from what Francis called himself: God's jester. Poorly received on release, it became one of Rossellini's most loved films later.
