Ho Meng-Hua's 1975 Hong Kong film is built on the idea of a strange weapon: the emperor's army develops a device thrown from a distance that takes a head from its body, made of a basket-shaped frame, a chain and blades. When the emperor starts removing everyone he sees as a threat this way, Mau Tang, one of the guards trained to use it, abandons his post and runs. What follows is the story of a man hunted with the same weapon. The film comes from the Shaw Brothers studio of the period and gives as much room to political persecution as to its fights. The design of the weapon and the scenes of its use became among the most imitated elements of the genre. The violence is heavy. Who it's for: viewers who like Hong Kong martial arts and the extreme end of genre cinema. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding blood and decapitation; the film takes its name from them.
