The Garden

Jakub's life has come to a stop. His job is gone, he is at odds with his father, and an affair with a married woman is falling apart. He leaves the city for the country house his grandfather left him. The house is neglected and the garden overgrown. He settles in, and odd visitors start arriving: people who appear in the garden, guests whose identity is never settled, a girl who rises a few inches off the ground. He stops trying to work it out. Going back to the city stops occurring to him. Martin Šulík directs the Slovak film; ninety-nine minutes, with Roman Luknár as Jakub and Marián Labuda as his father. It moves without separating the real from the fabular, and became one of the most discussed films made in Slovakia in the first years of independence.
