What The Interpreter Is About
Martin Šulík’s 2018 film is a Slovak-Czech-Austrian co-production. Ali Ungar, eighty, comes across a book in which a former SS officer describes his wartime activities in Slovakia, and works out that this is the man who killed his parents. He goes to take revenge and finds instead the man’s seventy-year-old son Georg, a retired teacher who has spent his life avoiding his father. Georg decides he wants to know what his father did and offers to travel with Ali as his interpreter. The two drive across Slovakia listening to people who survived the war. Jiří Menzel plays Ali and Peter Simonischek plays Georg. It screened at the Berlinale in 2018 and was Slovakia’s Oscar submission.
