What The Ghost That Never Returns Is About
Abram Room’s 1930 Soviet film adapts a story by Henri Barbusse and is set at a South American oilfield. Jose Real, sentenced to life for trying to organise the workers, is granted a single day of liberty after ten years to go and see his family. Nobody has ever come back alive from that day, because the prisoner is accompanied by a detective whose instruction is to kill him. What looks like a saga of proletarian struggle is really an existential drama: a lonely and unsure man is required to behave more heroically than he is built for, and keeps interrogating his own nerve. It is a late silent, made after sound had supposedly ended silent cinema.
