The Ghosts in Our Machine

The documentary follows the photographer Jo-Anne McArthur. She photographs animals. The film works with her over a year. She shoots in Canada. The United States and Europe are on the route too. Each stop holds a separate story. The stories open onto four industries. One is food production. One is fashion. One is entertainment. One is scientific research. The film argues that animals are individuals rather than material, and it says so openly, from a vegan position. The photographs are the material the film is built from. The camera watches the animals and the photographer’s work alike. Some of it is shot at shelters, and some of the animals are seen after being taken out of those industries. Liz Marshall directed the ninety three minute documentary, a Canadian production finished in 2013.
