What The Glass Menagerie Is About
An ageing Southern belle makes life difficult for both her ambitious son and her disabled daughter with her own warped ideas about how life is supposed to go. The daughter has withdrawn into her collection of glass animals, the son is thinking about leaving, and the mother insists on finding a gentleman caller. In Irving Rapper’s adaptation of Tennessee Williams, Jane Wyman plays the daughter, Gertrude Lawrence the mother and Kirk Douglas the visitor. The ending differs from the play: the studio wanted something more hopeful, and the ambiguity of the text was deliberately softened.
