What The Brave One Is About
A Mexican boy adopts Gitano, the bull whose life he saved during a storm, and the two of them build a close bond. When the animal’s legal owners take him back and send him to the bullring, the boy works tirelessly to stop the killing, and the president of Mexico signs a pardon for Gitano that does not arrive before the bull is already facing a matador in the arena in Mexico City. Irving Rapper’s hundred minute film opened in 1956 and won the Academy Award for best story. There was no such person as Robert Rich, the name on the award: it was a front for the blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, and the Academy was left badly exposed when that came out. The film was also nominated for editing and sound, with Michel Ray in the lead.
