What Rhapsody in Blue Is About
A heavily fictionalised life of George Gershwin, with his attempt to bring serious music onto Broadway as the through line. Directed by Irving Rapper for Warner Bros, it opened on 22 September 1945 and was Robert Alda’s first film. Several people from Gershwin’s own circle appear as themselves: Paul Whiteman, Al Jolson and Oscar Levant. Levant played most of the piano heard in the film and dubbed Alda’s playing as well. Rapper had wanted Tyrone Power for the lead, but Power was unavailable because of his war service. Joan Leslie, Alexis Smith, Charles Coburn, Hazel Scott and Anne Brown are also in the cast.
