What The Goebbels Experiment Is About
The film is built entirely out of Joseph Goebbels's own diaries. Kenneth Branagh reads from the notebooks he kept between 1924 and 1945, while archive footage of the period runs on screen. There is no outside commentary, no expert, no counter voice. All the force of the method is there: the gap between the cheerful story the man tells about himself and what is visible on the film becomes something the viewer assembles. Lutz Hachmeister directed and wrote it with Michael Kloft, with the BBC among the producers. It is a film to watch without forgetting for a moment who the narrator is.
