The Greatest

A couple lose their seventeen year old son in a car crash. Soon after the funeral a girl arrives at the door: she was with him just before he died, and she is pregnant. Shana Feste's subject is that grief runs differently in each person, so the father stops speaking and buries himself in work, the mother fixates on visiting the driver who saw the crash and is in hospital, and the younger brother goes to support groups. Pierce Brosnan and Susan Sarandon are the parents and Carey Mulligan the girl. The shape is familiar and some of the resolutions are too clean, but Mulligan's presence holds the story up. The silence inside the house is the best-built thing in it. Who it is for: viewers who like American independent drama about family grief. Who it is not for: anyone wanting an unpredictable story.
