A middle-aged couple in Maine take different views of their college-bound son's relationship with an older woman who is in the middle of a separation. Her former husband is still around. The film is about the aftermath more than the event; the second half is built almost entirely on what two people in a house cannot say to each other. Silence is used here as an instrument of tension. It is Todd Field's first feature, with Tom Wilkinson, Sissy Spacek and Marisa Tomei, adapted from a story by Andre Dubus. A real warning: there is a killing and a long process of grief. The pace is slow and the tension hardens in the final section.
