What The Hard Way Is About
Helen Chernen is stuck in a coal town, and when she cannot get out herself she pushes her younger sister Katherine onto the stage. The girl’s talent works and so does her sister’s ruthlessness, but the higher they climb the more people are left behind, and Helen’s ambition turns on Katherine in the end. Vincent Sherman builds a show business story as a story about class: the subject is not fame but the price of getting out of poverty. Adapted from a story by Irwin Shaw. Ida Lupino won the New York critics’ award for best actress for it.
