What The Young Philadelphians Is About
Anthony Lawrence is a young lawyer determined to rise in Philadelphia. The society he was born into has never quite accepted him, and he tries to close that gap with his career. The higher he climbs, the more the choices arrive at once: what his fiancée Joan expects, what his partners are calculating, and his obligation to defend his friend Chester on a murder charge. Vincent Sherman adapted Richard P. Powell's 1956 novel, with Paul Newman as Anthony. Robert Vaughn, as Chester, who lost an arm in Korea and has been drinking since, was nominated for the supporting actor Oscar; the film took three nominations in all.
