The Hidden Face

A Spanish-Colombian thriller whose whole force comes from its split structure. Adrián is a Spanish conductor who has moved to Colombia to take over the Bogotá Philharmonic, with his girlfriend Belén following him there. The film opens on a video in which she tells him she is leaving. Adrián falls apart, meets Fabiana, who works in a bar, and she soon moves into the house. Then the film goes back and tells the same days from Belén's side. The house has a hidden room left by previous owners; it looks into the living room through a one-way mirror and cannot be opened from within. Belén went in to test whether Adrián was faithful. The second half replays every scene of the first with a different meaning attached. The real tension is not murder but the fact that a person behind a wall cannot be heard. Quim Gutiérrez, Clara Lago and Martina García star. It was remade for Indian cinema in 2013 as Murder 3. Who it is for: viewers who like a well-executed thriller built on a single idea. Who it is not for: anyone who has already heard the twist. Almost everything rests on that turn, and once known there is little left.
