What The High and the Mighty Is About
An airliner flying from Honolulu to San Francisco develops a fault after it passes the point of no return. In the cockpit is Dan Roman, a second officer carrying a disaster in his past; in the cabin everyone has a story of their own. The film established everything that now counts as cliche: the air disaster genre starts here, and every later Airport film, including the comedies that mocked them, used this shape. Dimitri Tiomkin's score won an Oscar and its whistled theme became one of the best known tunes of the period.
