The Hills of Disorder

The film tells what happened to Carapiru. He is a man of the Awá-Guajá people. In 1978 his village in Maranhão was attacked by farmers and loggers. Most of the community was killed. Carapiru got away and fled into the forest. He then walked alone for ten years. When he was found he was two thousand kilometres from where he started. Some settlers helped him along the road. In the end government men uprooted him once more. Andrea Tonacci builds the account by joining documentary and reenactment. The man acting out those years is Carapiru himself. Sydney Possuelo, who worked with indigenous peoples, appears as well, and the images rest on long takes and silence. The hundred and thirty five minute film took the best film award at Gramado, a Brazilian production Andrea Tonacci finished in 2006.
