What The Horse Is About
Auguste Maroilleur is an old man who runs a large Normandy farm with an iron grip. When he discovers that one of his grandsons is mixed up in drug trafficking and has hidden the goods on his land, he does not call the police. He deals with it his own way and destroys the heroin. The Paris gang that owns it does not accept the arrangement, and comes to the farm. The title is not a metaphor about animals: in French slang la horse means heroin. Pierre Granier-Deferre, adapting Michel Lambesc's novel, uses Jean Gabin as a patriarch who is old and does not step back. Serge Gainsbourg wrote the score.
