What The House on Chelouche Street Is About
A family that has lost its father comes from Egypt and settles in the land under British administration. Once well off, they now live in poverty in a small flat, with the mother, Clara, going out to clean. Fifteen year old Sami leaves school to work for a locksmith, but a strike at the workshop stops everything. Meanwhile he becomes attached to Sonia, a librarian ten years older than he is; the difference in age makes the relationship an unequal one and the film does not look away from that. Sami joins an armed organisation, and when the war begins he leaves home. Gila Almagor appears in Moshe Mizrahi’s hundred and ten minute film, completed in 1973.
