A family history in four chapters, running from 1948 to the present. Elia Suleiman is telling his own family: the days Nazareth surrendered, his father, who joined the resistance, his mother, writing to relatives in exile, and the daily life of the Palestinians who came to be counted as citizens of Israel. Suleiman worked from his father's diaries and his mother's letters. The film proceeds with almost no dialogue: fixed frames, long silences, scenes that tip into the absurd. Suleiman is in it himself, as a man who watches everything and never speaks. It does not turn the tragedy into comedy; it holds both inside the same frame.
