The House Under the Rocks

Ferenc comes back to his village after the war. He had been a prisoner for a long time. His wife had died while he was away. His son has been brought up by her sister. The sister is called Teri. Ferenc marries again. He settles in the same house with his new wife. The house stands under an extinct volcano. There is no other house nearby. Three people live there. Each of them wants something for themselves. All three depend on the others. That dependence closes in on all of them, and the house works like a trap. The story comes from a 1945 novella by Sándor Tatay. The film took an award in San Francisco and is counted among the forerunners of the Hungarian new wave. János Görbe, Margit Bara and Irén Psota appear in the ninety six minute film, a Hungarian production Károly Makk finished in 1959.
