Another Way

In Hungary in 1958, two years after the crushing of the 1956 uprising, Éva takes a job as a journalist at a magazine. While testing how far she can go in what she writes, a closeness forms between her and her colleague Lívia; Lívia feels the same, but she is married and cannot risk losing her own life. The film places the limit of telling a political truth and the limit of living as oneself inside the same story and shows that both were drawn by the same order. Károly Makk’s hundred and two minute Hungarian film was adapted from a semi-autobiographical novel by Erzsébet Galgóczi, who wrote the screenplay with him. Jadwiga Jankowska-Cieślak plays Éva and Grażyna Szapołowska plays Lívia. It was completed in 1982, and Jankowska-Cieślak won the best actress award at Cannes.
