A Very Moral Night

A brothel in a small Hungarian town becomes the home of a medical student when the women there learn he has run out of rent money and take him in. The arrangement runs for a while, until word comes that his mother is coming to visit. The house has to be turned into another house at once; parts are handed out and everything changes, from the furniture to the way people speak. The film does not define the women by their trade and shows them as the true authors of this performance. The account reverses the question of whose morals are being taught. What is ridiculous is not the women’s lives but how easily respectability is manufactured. Iren Psota and Margit Makay appear in Karoly Makk’s ninety four minute Hungarian film, completed in 1977.
