The In-Laws

The In-Laws (original title Teściowie) is director Kuba Michalczuk's feature debut, written by Marek Modzelewski, who also wrote the stage play it's based on. The film follows both families showing up to a wedding reception even after the wedding itself is cancelled at the last minute, spiraling into chaos over a rich versus poor family clash; it opened on September 10, 2021. Despite releasing during the COVID-19 pandemic, the film drew roughly 400,000 viewers. A sequel, The In-Laws 2, was made in 2023, directed not by Michalczuk but by Kalina Alabrudzińska. Who it's for: anyone curious about a Polish comedy where two families still show up to a wedding reception after the wedding itself is cancelled, drawing hundreds of thousands of viewers even during the pandemic. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a warm, conflict free family gathering, since the film directly engages class conflict and tension.
