What The Japanese Wife Is About
Snehamoy teaches mathematics in a Bengali village. Miyage lives in Japan, and the two exchange marriage vows entirely by post: she sends a ring, he sends vermilion and conch shell bangles. Fifteen years pass without a single meeting and the bond holds anyway. Then a young widow named Sandhya moves in with her eight year old son, and the arrangement is quietly tested. The teacher grows close to the boy, discovers what fatherhood feels like, and finds an unspoken understanding with Sandhya as well. Aparna Sen adapts Kunal Basu's story at a patient, low volume pace that trusts the viewer to sit still with restraint.
