What The Karamazov Brothers Is About
A theatre company from Prague travels to Krakow to stage Dostoevsky’s novel; the play is to be performed in a derelict steelworks as part of a festival called Closer to Life. The roof is close to caving in, so the actors rehearse in safety helmets. Their only regular spectator is a worker whose son has had a serious accident in the factory; instead of sitting at the boy’s side, the man watches every rehearsal. The novel asks about patricide and about whether God exists; the film lifts those questions off the stage and carries them into the factory. Petr Zelenka directed, with music by Jan A. P. Kaczmarek. It won best film and best director at the 2008 Czech Lion awards and was sent as the Czech entry for the Oscars.
