What Year of the Devil Is About
The documentary maker Jan Holman sets out to follow the famous singer and songwriter Jaromír Nohavica on tour with the band Čechomor. The pairing catches on more than anyone expected, but the success exacts a heavy price from the band members and from the director trailing them, and as the film goes on, ghosts, guardian angels and the Devil himself get involved. Petr Zelenka’s eighty eight minute Czech film is a fiction shot like a documentary; the musicians play themselves and Jaz Coleman plays the Devil. It opened on 7 March 2002, won the Crystal Globe at the 37th Karlovy Vary Film Festival and took six Czech Lions in 2003, including best film and best director.
