Kautokeino, in the far north of Norway, in 1852. Sami reindeer herders keep losing animals to the debts they run up with the merchant who sells them liquor, while a religious revival arriving from the south teaches them to stop drinking and to start asking what they are owed. Church and local authority read the revival as a threat, the pressure builds, and blood is spilled in the village. The trials that follow are as harsh as the night itself. Nils Gaup tells a piece of his own people's history from the Sami side, with a woman named Elen at its centre. The skulls of the two men executed afterwards sat in university collections for well over a century before being returned. Gaup's earlier Pathfinder was the first feature ever made in the Sami language.
