What Head Above Water Is About
Nils Gaup's 1993 Norwegian film takes place in a holiday house on an island. Lene is left alone when her husband and his friend go off fishing, and her former lover Gaute turns up unannounced. Drunk, he falls asleep in the double bed while Lene takes the couch. When the men come back in the morning she tries to wake Gaute and finds that he is dead. What follows is a black comedy about three people making steadily more absurd decisions while trying to hide a body. It was among the ten most watched films in Norway in 1993 and took the Amanda for best Norwegian film. Hollywood remade it in 1996.
