What The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain Is About
Five in the morning, 19 November 2011. In a housing project in White Plains, the medical alert pendant worn by Kenneth Chamberlain, a sixty-eight-year-old former Marine, goes off by accident while he sleeps. The police who arrive ask him to open the door; he tells them he is fine and does not need help. The door stays shut. Over more than an hour the tension builds, the police force the door, and it ends with Chamberlain dead. David Midell's film plays out almost entirely in one apartment and close to real time, with Frankie Faison as Chamberlain. The case is real: a grand jury declined to indict the officers, federal prosecutors closed their file for lack of sufficient evidence, and a civil suit found neither the police nor the city liable.
