What The Knife Is About
During the Second World War, in Bosnia, the feud between two neighbouring families, the Muslim Osmanovic and the Christian Jugovic, turns in one night into a massacre; houses are stormed and a baby is carried off. Years later Alija Osmanovic starts to look into who he is and where his roots lie, and the answer he finds makes him think again about everything he knew about himself. The account means to show how fragile an identity built on blood is. Miroslav Lekic’s hundred and thirty minute Serbian film was adapted from Vuk Draskovic’s novel; in the region some found it nationalist and others said it showed the absurdity of hatred. It was completed in 1999.
