What The Last Frontier Is About
October 1941, the Germans are closing on Moscow and there are no units left to hold the line in front of them. Around three and a half thousand cadets from the military schools at Podolsk are sent to the front and told to hold the Ilyinsky sector until reinforcements arrive. Badly outnumbered, they hold for close to two weeks, and most of them do not come back. The event is real. The film builds it openly as heroic narrative: large in scale, high in feeling, free of doubt. One of the state-backed war films Russia has produced steadily in recent years.
